Termite Season in Los Angeles: Misleading Advertising

Termite Season in Los Angeles

Lately you hear a lot of radio commercials about having your home inspected for termites during termite season. The fact is you need to worry about termites all year long. There really is no termite season as once they infest your home they are there year-round.Temite Eating

One thing is true, there is a termite swarming season twice a year for the two different termite species most commonly found in Southern California and the Los Angeles area. These are the Subterranean Termites that come from the ground and they swarm in the spring. The next species that we have to worry about and probably the most damaging to any structure is the Drywood termite, they swarm during the fall months usually from September through December.

Having a termite inspection any time of the year can provide you with evidence of alive infestation within your Los Angeles area home. Although a termite inspection is quite limited as only about 10% of your structure can be inspected for an active live infestation. Subterranean termites are usually the easiest ones to find as they build little mud tubes up from the ground to the foundation of your home. It’s the Drywood termites that require a more skilled and experienced termite inspector. As this species of termite actively lives inside the wood framing of your home and causes structural damage every day

Drywood termites never have to come out for any reason, there is only one time of year that they take flight and swarm to start new colonies. In most cases once a Drywood termite colony has established themselves in your home during the swarming season in the fall they will just move from one wood member to another within your home.

The most common areas define Drywood termite evidence is in windowsills and baseboards. Most people describe their evidence as sand or small little pellets. The evidence of Drywood termites is very obvious to experienced termite inspector. The small little pellets that people describe his termite fecal matter being pushed out from a termite gallery inside your home.

So don’t be fooled by radio commercials advertising termite season and thinking you only need to worry about termites in your home during this time of year. Termites are active all year long feeding on the wood members of your home and increasing the size of their colony.
